Tips on Writing a News Release

1. Establish the news worthiness of the release. Tell the audience how the information is intended for them and why they should continue to read it. Does it impact a lot of people? Did the news recently happen? Does it involve a well-know person or organization? Did it happen nearby them? Is it a story about a conflict or have some element of weirdness? Are a lot of people talking about it? Ask yourself, “How are people going to relate to this and will they be able to connect?”

2. Start with a brief description of the news and then expand on the details. Known as the inverted pyramid, the writer needs to write the essential information at the beginning of the story and the details of who, what, when, where, why and how afterwards. Make sure the first 10 words of your release are effective as they are the most important.

3. Deal with the facts as much as possible. Let the reader interpret the facts. Avoid opinions. Don’t be cute, copy, mysterious or misleading. Communicate in the clearest, most accurate, logical and concise manner possible. Anticipate questions and answer them!

4. Provide as much contact information as possible: individual to contact, address, phone, fax, email, web site address. Now that you have hooked the reader, let them know where they can get more information.
